This summer, the literary world celebrated the 100th anniversary of Ingeborg Bachmann’s birth. The poet was already an iconic and mythic figure while she was alive. And her works continue to fascinate many readers today, while her life story provides fodder for speculation. Andrea Stoll’s biography Two People Are Within Me explores the unmistakable range of Bachmann’s inner conflicts from their origins and shows how this great poet became caught in a spiral of self fashioning and self destruction.
