Saying No. With Matthias Brandt and Ruth Hoffmann
In 2025, Matthias Brandt delivered a powerful speech at the Berlin-Plötzensee Memorial Center, commemorating the resistance fighters involved in the attack against Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944. His father, Willy Brandt, a political exile and later German Chancellor, and his mother Rut were also part of the resistance. Based on that speech, Brandt’s book Saying No reflects on the courage and motives of the July 20 conspirators and other resistance fighters. In it, he questions what consequences history demands of us today. On stage, he meets historian and journalist Ruth Hoffmann. Her book The Far-Right Raid explores how the new far-right is hijacking our values and misusing them for its own purposes. Amid the menacing rise of far-right extremism and the electoral success of the AfD, the two authors will discuss resistance in the Nazi era and personal responsibility today.
