With his bestselling debut “Schönwald”, Philipp Oehmke wrote a great German social novel. His second book Papenburg builds on that first work, and again centers on complicated family dynamics. The story takes us to the USA: Emilia Papenburg has left her husband Benni and moved with her children to New York. She wants a fresh start without the family she believes she has failed, much like her parents did previously. Or could she be wrong? Emilia’s father and her long-lost mother want to bring the family together at any price, even if they have to endure old wounds and dashed hopes. Oehmke has written a brilliant portrait of Western society and created a cast of characters desperately and inventively searching for solidarity and empathy.
