Verena-Kristina Kirchberg meets Frank Goosen. Encounters through the kiosk window and across the bar
Die andere Seite der Maloche – Nachbarschaft im Revier
In the Ruhr region, the local kiosks and corner pubs are more than a just a place to buy cigarettes, beer or a newspaper. They are places to talk and meet, shaped by the regional history of coal mining and the people who frequent them. They are places where miners would congregate after their shift, neighbors stop by for a brief chat, customers become regulars and friendships arise from chance encounters. At this event, kiosk owner Verena-Kristina Kirchberg and author Frank Goosen will talk about these special places. In Ich bin Büdchen, Kirchberg writes about her daily experiences operating a local kiosk – the regulars, weird characters, mini-dramas and the quiet heroes and heroines. In Goosen’s humorous novel Lovely Rita, we saddle up to the bar of a traditional neighborhood pub in the Ruhr region, where people of all kinds cross paths. Join us for a fond glimpse through the sliding window and across the bar top at all the things that truly bring people together.
