“Human rights exist only as a whole; they are indivisible, apply to everyone, and that means equally for all. [...] Those who think human rights apply only to people like them do not understand what human rights are.” Are there limits to how much empathy we can have for others? What does radical humanism mean? Are there limits to how much empathy we can have for others? What is our obligation to remember the past? Where do we draw the lines of responsibility to speak in the name of human rights? Or should nothing prevent us from seeing others as part of a “universal humanity”? Carolin Emcke was already asking these questions long before the 7th of October, but now they are even more pressing. Her new book returns to the only question that truly matters: What Does a Person Count For?
Carolin Emcke has been traveling to Israel-Palestine for more than 20 years. Most recently, she was there to talk to people from Be'eri and Jenin, from Tel Aviv and Ramallah, searching for the “universal we” in the local discourse.
