Christiane Hoffmann: The Dreams We Had. With Martina Gedeck
In the late 1980s, a group of young women are studying Russian. They read Dostoevsky, drink vodka and travel through the Soviet Union. It is a time of new beginnings, of dreams of a democratic Russia and a peaceful Europe. Decades later, one of the women takes her own life, precisely during the week when Russia invades Ukraine.
Christiane Hoffmann worked for newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for nearly 20 years, reporting as a foreign correspondent from Moscow and Tehran. From 2022 until 2025, she served as First Deputy Spokesperson for the German federal government. On February 24, 2022, she heard the news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and of the death of one of her closest friends. In The Dreams We Had, she sensitively weaves together memories of a special friendship with the history of German-Russian-Ukrainian relations.
