“You must know Gatsby.” Claudia Michelsen, Benno Fürmann and Bernhard Robbe on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece
The story of phenomenally rich Jay Gatsby and beautifully smug Daisy Buchanan is a classic piece of 20th century literature. In his timeless masterpiece released in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald paints an unforgiving portrait of the disillusioned US upper class. Fueled by the magic of the Roaring Twenties, the book combines lyrical beauty and brutal realism. Now considered the “Great American Novel” of the 20th century, the book was not immediately well received: Fitzgerald died in 1940 believing his “Great Gatsby” was a veritable flop. It was not until after World War II that the book was rediscovered and took its place in US pop culture. Now, 100 years after its publication, Claudia Michelsen und Benno Fürmann are rolling out the red carpet for the excellent new translation by Bernhard Robben, and telling the story of Great Gatsby and his creator through letters and contemporary documents.
