What Democracy Means – with Julian Nida-Rümelin
Voices of change. Democracy and cohesion in the former coal mining region of the Ruhr
Democracy as a political and social system is in danger worldwide, even in countries considered to be pioneers and role-models of modern democracy, such as the US or France. Illiberal, far-right populist parties determine government policy in several European countries. In Germany, a far-right party doubled its share of the vote within a short period of time. Against this backdrop, philosopher and political scientist Julian Nida-Rümelin has published a new book, Was Demokratie ausmacht – und wie sie aus der Krise kommt [“What Democracy Means – and How to Save It”]. He provides a precise analysis of the fundamental elements and principles of democracy and develops strategies for strengthening them. As a former state minister for cultural affairs and member of the German Ethics Council, he has spent decades debating issues of democracy, ethics and political responsibility – and now draws conclusions from his years of political engagement.
