starve pray sob swim. New poetry from the region – with Sirka Elspaß
Radio station Österreichischer Rundfunk called her “one of the great upcoming talents in contemporary poetry”, Anke Engelke is a self-confessed fan of her work, and her debut collection, “i am blow-drying my lashes” blew everyone else away, too. Sirka Elspaß was born in Oberhausen, and starve pray sob swim is her second book with renowned publisher Suhrkamp. In it, she turns her attention to our own bodies, our own precarious beings, before the focus shifts to the outside, to nature, animals and, above all, to the birds in the sky. Sirka Elspaß’ search for comfort is exactly that: comforting. In spite of all the vulnerability and suffering, her poetry has a delicate lightness to it. Her works help us get through the pain of being in the world. They show us that life goes on, that we are not alone – and sometimes all it takes is a small moment, a humorous observation or a conciliatory verse. Host: Rainer Piecha
