Robust debates are necessary if we want to strengthen and defend our democratic interactions. Therefore, one of the key questions of our social coexistence is: How can we successfully communicate and exchange views in a society where differences are increasingly leading to stubborn conflicts? In The Outrage Trap, political scientist Saba-Nur Cheema and historian Meron Mendel argue that the problem is not differences of opinion but rather how we approach them. On stage, they are joined by sociologist Harald Welzer. In his latest book Das Haus der Gefühle [“The House of Feelings”], he describes the fundamental influence that emotions such as trust, safety and optimism have on our democracy. Together, they will discuss how our interactions can be shaped today – especially in the Ruhr region, where neighbors historically supported each other in an era of hard physical work.
