I’m drowning in the waters of my own love
In 1920, painter Baladine Klossowska re-encounters poet Rainer Maria Rilke. The divorced mother of two sons falls passionately in love with Rilke. But after a brief, intense love affair, he becomes increasingly detached. While she wants absolute closeness and loses herself in her love for him, he demands space and calm in order to write. The two exchange yearning letters, always trying to find the right balance between closeness and distance. One of these letters is the last he writes before his death... In her book Ich ertrinke in den Wassern meiner eigenen Liebe [“I’m Drowning in the Waters of My Own Love”], Julia Franck tells the story of a female obsession in this sensitive literary portrayal of Rilke’s last love. On stage she meets actor Christian Berkel, who brings to life the emotions – a constant seesaw between desire and pining – in a pitch-perfect reading.
