Andrey Kurkov on Samson, the past and the present in Ukraine
He’s one of Ukraine’s greatest authors; his books became best sellers in Germany and have won international awards. For his second book in the historical crime series about a police officer named Samson, Andrey Kurkov (“Diary of an Invasion”) returns to Kyiv in 1919 amid revolution, civil war and hunger. In “Serdce - ne mjaso” [“Samson and the Stolen Heart”], the young investigator must not only prevent illegal meat sales but also free his girlfriend Nadezhda from her captives. The author, who is also President of PEN Ukraine, will join Sonia Mikich (former Moscow correspondent and editor-in-chief at WDR) to give a glimpse into the book and discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine. Kurkov, who writes in Russian, fears that Putin is “destroying not only Ukraine, but also Russia and the Russian language” (taz). He will talk about writing during times of war and the power of literature.
