Edgar Selge: Jura’s Last Winter
When actor Edgar Selge made his writing debut with “So You Finally Found Us”, critics raved about the work. “It is impossible to write better than this,” wrote newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Now, he presents his second novel, which lives up to the hype of the first: Jura’s Last Winter is set in German history’s darkest years, telling the story of 16-year-old Jura Ryabinkin, who starves to death during the Siege of Leningrad by the German Wehrmacht. Jura leaves behind a diary that the narrator of this novel reads over and over again, until he believes he knows the boy. Jura becomes a fictional character, just as the narrator does. Their encounter begins cautiously and grows closer as the story progresses. Between the two, an exchange unfolds about youth, dreams, literature, mothers, violence, strangeness, and closeness. Selge creates a literary monument to Jura Ryabinkin which you will not soon forget.
