Brutally fragile – are men victims? Sophia Fritz and Ole Liebl on men and feelings
We all know men who cannot – or do not want to – show their feelings. When their emotions do become visible, it often shows up as anger, joy or pride, but rarely as sadness, doubt or vulnerable love. Why is it still so difficult, even today, for men to talk about their feelings? What role do patriarchal ideas of masculinity play here? And what price do men pay for this? These questions are tackled by Ole Liebl and Sophia Fritz: In Brutal fragile Typen [“Brutally Fragile Guys”], Liebl examines the complex and political interconnections between feelings and masculinity, which still prevent men from being emotional equals. In her work Man, the Victim, Fritz approaches the topic from a personal perspective: Following the loss of her brother, she explores the contradictions of being a man in the present day. Without making accusations, the two authors question whether new, freer forms of masculinity are conceivable.
