After the bees die out, the world descends into chaos. Food becomes scarce and violence divides the land. Art and freedom are a thing of the past and old gender roles are seen as the way to ensure safety and stability. Jess is one of the girls penned in a camp, who are forced, day in, day out, to pollinate fruit trees by hand. From books, she knows what the world was like before the collapse – and that paintbrushes were not invented to pollinate plants. One day, she discovers tubes of paint and then sneaks outside the camp at night to paint a powerful mural on the wall. This act stirs the embers of rebellion among the other girls. Once they get the thought of freedom in their heads, they can think of nothing else.
