The glaciers are melting, certain jobs are disappearing, old orders are crumbling. Contemporary Western society is marked by forms of loss in manifold ways. And these losses are driving people onto the streets, into therapists’ offices and into the arms of populists. They set the tone for our times. In his new study Loss, sociologist Andreas Reckwitz (“The Society of Singularities”) delivers yet another important contribution to further the understanding of our volatile times.
In his essay A Time of Loss, writer Daniel Schreiber (“Alone”) takes this key human experience down to the personal level: Grappling with the death of his father, he recounts a day spent in foggy Venice and asks the question: How can we live our lives in times of rampant loss?
A discussion about farewells and staying behind, about society and humanity, about facts and feelings. Host: Shelly Kupferberg
