Christiane Hoffmann, the German government’s deputy spokesperson, documents an impressive search for clues in “Everything We Don’t Remember. On Foot on My Father’s Escape Route”. She walked the route her father took to flee the Red Army in the winter of 1945. Her literary record of the journey was celebrated by the press (“An impressive book”, Die Zeit) and became a best seller. Harald Jähner caused a stir with his well-respected study about the mentality of the post-war years, “Aftermath: Life in the Fallout of the Third Reich”. Now he’s written a new book about the years between the wars (“Exhilaration: The Short Life Between the Wars”). The pair will talk about the legacy of the past, about gaps in memory, about suppressing and remembering in Germany. An evening about a time that still echoes in today’s society. Host: Jürgen Wiebicke
