Karl Bartos and the sound of the machine

“THE MODEL”, “THE ROBOTS”, “COMPUTER WORLD”: many of the biggest chart hits from the legendary electropop band Kraftwerk were co-written by Karl Bartos (born in 1952). The classically trained drummer was a member of the group from 1975 until 1990. After he joined, the Düsseldorf-based quartet developed the unmistakable sound architecture that made the band so influential worldwide. Kraftwerk’s music had a profound impact on the development of hip-hop, techno and electopop. With great respect, but also with analytic clarity, Karl Bartos’s autobiography gives us fascinating insights into the inner life of a band which to this day tries very hard to remain secretive and inaccessible. Der Klang der Maschine [“The Sound of the Machine”] is the only book about Kraftwerk that you should read – written by someone who really knows what he’s talking about. “What the Beatles are to rock music, Kraftwerk is to electronic dance music” (New York Times). Host: Klaus Fiehe
